Origin of the motif

At the Kaiserstuhl · Spring

Photographed by Anna Lea Theodocion at the Kaiserstuhl. The work is based on two red tulips, which were initially captured as part of a natural garden scene. For “II – Encounter,” the two blossoms were detached from their original setting and placed against a muted, olive-colored pictorial space. Their differing height, openness, and posture were deliberately preserved. The initial observation of the two blossoms thus forms the foundation for the reduced composition of the second work in the “Blossom Beings” series.

About the Artist

Anna Lea Theodocion combines fine art photography with a poetic visual language. From nature, architecture, and light, she creates serene pictorial worlds of timeless presence.

More about the artist →

“II – Encounter” brings two floral forms into a silent dialogue. Against the deep olive background, the blossoms emerge as distinct figures, differing in height, aperture, and posture, while simultaneously appearing clearly related to one another. A space of tension between proximity and distance arises between them. The larger blossom appears composed and upright, the smaller one more open and closer to the viewer. Neither is reduced to a mere complement of the other; both maintain their own presence. Thus, the botanical form becomes a counterpart. “Encounter” views relationship not as a merging, but as a quiet coexistence in which independence and connection exist simultaneously. As the second work in the “Blossom Beings” series, “Encounter” follows “I – Appearance”: what first emerges from the silence as a single figure now meets a second.

About the Blossom Beings series

“Blossom Beings” views floral forms beyond their purely botanical appearance. Detached from their natural environment, they emerge as independent pictorial figures, positioned between body and surface, proximity and remoteness, nature and inner imagination. “Encounter” carries this idea further, as a silent counterpart arises from the single appearance.
