Origin of the motif

At the Kaiserstuhl · Summer

Photographed by Anna Lea Theodocion in her grandmother’s garden, around the same time as “II – Stille.” Both white roses were created shortly before the death of her cat, to whom the artist was deeply attached. At the same time, she discovered the “Lichtwesen” (being of light) in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, a passage whose concept of light, darkness, and unfolding touched her directly and altered her perception of the subject. In “III – Entfaltung,” these experiences intensify quite clearly. The opened rose emerges from the darkness into the light in places and became a personal image of memory, transience, and appearance for the artist.

About the Artist

Anna Lea Theodocion combines fine art photography with a poetic visual language. From nature, architecture, and light, she creates serene pictorial worlds of timeless presence.

More about the artist →

“III – Unfolding” carries the movement of “Rose Devotion” into the light. The open white rose emerges from deep green; light wanders across its petals, while buds and leaves remain between visibility and darkness. The work is personally connected to the memory of the artist’s late cat and her encounter at the time with Hegel’s “light-being” in the Phenomenology of Spirit. Here, light does not serve as an illustration of a philosophical thought, but rather as the starting point for an independent visual language: form appears by emerging from the darkness. In “Unfolding,” light, memory, and transience thus merge into an image of transition.

As a triptych

“III – Unfolding” concludes “Rose Devotion.” What begins in “I – Embers” as warmth and quiet burning, and transforms into introspection in “II – Stillness,” finds its opening into the light here. The three roses form a movement between embers, stillness, and unfolding; between warmth, introspection, and light.
