Origin of the motif

At the Kaiserstuhl · Early Summer

Photographed by Anna Lea Theodocion in her grandmother's garden. The rose was captured in the warm evening light, which makes its red petals stand out against the dark green. The image captures a quiet moment between light and shadow while preserving the memory of a familiar place. “I – Ember” forms the starting point of the “Rose Devotion” series and was created before the two later white rose motifs, “II – Silence” and “III – Unfolding”.

About the Artist

Anna Lea Theodocion combines fine art photography with a poetic visual language. From nature, architecture, and light, she creates serene pictorial worlds of timeless presence.

More about the artist →

“I – Ember” emerges from the darkness. The deep red of the rose and the warm light lend it a restrained intensity, like a silent burning that asserts itself against the surrounding gloom. As the first work of “Rose Devotion,” “Ember” stands for warmth, vitality, and presence. The light is still bound to color and physicality. In the two following white roses, it increasingly becomes the defining element of the image sequence.

As a triptych

“I – Ember” opens “Rose Devotion.” From its warmth and color intensity, a movement develops that leads through the introspection of “II – Stillness” to the light-permeated “III – Unfolding.” Thus, the triptych begins in the deep red of the rose and, work by work, opens itself to the light.
