Origin of the motif

At the Kaiserstuhl · Summer

Photographed by Anna Lea Theodocion in her grandmother’s garden. “II – Silence” was created around the same time as “III – Unfolding” and shortly before the death of her cat, with whom the artist had a deep connection. During this same period, she was engaging with Hegel’s description of the “being of light” in the Phenomenology of Spirit. Her encounter with this idea shaped her perception of light and darkness in the two photographs. In “II – Silence,” the white rose appears restrained, almost hovering against the dark green. The photograph thus became a silent image caught between the present, memory, and transience.

About the Artist

Anna Lea Theodocion combines fine art photography with a poetic visual language. From nature, architecture, and light, she creates serene pictorial worlds of timeless presence.

More about the artist →

“II – Silence” shows the white rose in a moment of reflection. Its bright petals emerge gently from the dark green and appear like a quiet glow. Unlike the warmth of “I – Ember,” the light here seems restrained and almost disembodied. The rose forms a transition: between darkness and light, presence and transience, intensity and introspection. Its stillness prepares the opening that takes place in the final work, “III – Unfolding.”

As a triptych

As the tranquil center of “Rose Devotion,” “II – Silence” absorbs the intensity of “I – Ember” and transforms it into introspection and reflection. At the same time, its quiet emergence from the darkness already points toward “III – Unfolding.” Thus, the middle rose becomes a silent transition between ember and light.
